Visitor's guide
A neighbourhood market in the heart of Chamberí, serving locals since 1876. Some fifty stalls under one roof: fresh fish and seafood, butchers, cheese and ibérico ham, fruit and vegetables, wine — and La Chispería, the food hall that keeps the market buzzing into the evening.
Chamberí has done its shopping here since 1876. The building you see today opened in 1943, and it remains what it has always been: not a food court built for tourists, but a working neighbourhood market where locals come daily.
Many stalls are family affairs, some running three generations deep. The fishmonger knows which day the boats bring the best catch; the butcher remembers what your grandmother used to order. Ask them anything — sharing what they know is half the job.
Produce arrives daily from Madrid's wholesale markets and local suppliers: fish from the coast overnight, fruit and vegetables in season, meat cut to order. What you see was not there yesterday.
By day, the traditional stalls. From midday to midnight, La Chispería: a cluster of small restaurants and bars — Spanish classics, ramen, burgers, Asturian cachopo, wine and vermouth — where the neighbourhood comes to eat and linger. Same roof, different rhythm.
